SOME BY MI Yuja Niacin Blemish Care Serum Review

I had a rocky start with Some By Mi as a brand - their 30 day miracle toner is a massively overhyped product, and when everyone is praising something, I often automatically want to hate it. But I try to be fair and use the products before forming an opinion (it’s why I suffered through the whole Fifty Shades of Gray series and can say with confidence that it’s not for me). The toner left me somewhat unimpressed - review here.

But a brand is more than a single popular product. This time, I decided to try SOME BY MI Yuja Niacin Blemish Care Serum, available on Jolse. This serum won Jolse Beauty 2020 award and promises to brighten the skin, help with uneven tone, blemishes, and freckles. The formula contains yuja extract (a citrus fruit somewhat similar to a lemon), niacinamide, adenosine, and other plant extracts - a full ingredient list is available at the end of the article.

How to use:

  • Apply after cleansing and toning

  • Gently spread over the face and neck, pat in

  • Follow with moisturizer

  • Don’t forget SPF in the morning

Some By Mi Yuja Niacin serum has 5% niacinamide, glutathione plus arbutin to slow down melanin production. All of these are great ingredients to help with pigmentation (learn more about my favorite ways to help with pigmentation in this video).

The product has a gel consistency and a refreshing citrus scent. It’s not heavy or sticky at all, gets absorbed quickly by my combination skin, and works well under SPF and makeup. The pump bottle is a great packaging choice for convenient dispensing of the needed amount.

When the marketing materials talk about blemishes, I think they mean PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) marks left behind after breakouts. While I’m not a dermatologist, I wouldn’t apply this over active breakouts due to potentially irritating ingredients such as peppermint extract and citrus peel oil. My skin has no issues with those, but it’s best to avoid them if your barrier is compromised. Patch testing is always a good idea, especially for sensitive skin types.

My impressions

Spoiler alert - I need to get my hands on the entire Some By Mi Yuja Niacin line as soon as possible. I adore this serum and want to try everything else.

Let’s start with the packaging - isn’t it lovely? So bright and happy looking. It goes perfectly well with the refreshing citrus scent of the serum. While this can be used any time of the day, I often reach for the bottle in the morning just to wake up the senses. I could use any little ray of sunshine, even if it’s just in skincare, on these dark and cold mornings. My AM routine is incredibly simple, because anything before noon is night, and I would rather be sleeping. I start with a toner pad (currently using these ones), then either a vitamin C serum or the Yuja one, and then SPF. Sometimes, I’ll add in another moisturizer between the serum and the SPF stage as the weather is getting colder and my skin needs a bit of extra care.

I love how quickly this serum sinks in - I don’t have a lot of time to wait around in the mornings. My skin looks visibly brighter, too. Of course, that effect takes some time to achieve - don’t expect immediate results. I have very fair skin that’s prone to freckles and burns easily in the sun, so trying to fix and prevent hyperpigmentation is on my mind often. I’m happy to report that this serum does a great job at making the skin tone more even. And it’s so fun to use!
