I’ve taken my SPF game to a new level this year, expanding my efforts from topical creams to UPF clothing. Lips also need protection, but facial SPF is typically not ideal for that task. Thankfully, the world of Asian skincare has some lovely lip specific formulas. One of my favorites has been the Japanese Rohto Mentholatum Melty Cream Lip. It’s available on YesStyle (use reward code KBHOBBIT for a discount) and Stylevana (save with discount code INF10KBH).
Rohto Mentholatum Melty Cream Lip comes in a few variations, such as Milk Vanilla, Fragrance Free, and Rich Honey. I chose Matcha Green Tea. It does smell like matcha, which I adore, and leaves just a little bit of a greenish hue on the lips (if you look very closely). Most people likely wouldn’t notice that, and the brand materials say it’s colorless, but I tend to slather this on generously, and do see just a teeny bit of color.
These lip balms are very nourishing and easy to apply. The ingredients list features skin-loving components such as squalane, shea butter, avocado oil, ceramides, and more - check the end of the review for a complete breakdown.
How to use:
Apply to the lips any time a little care is needed
Can be used as a lip sleeping mask before bed
I also like using this around my nose when I’m sick and constantly blowing it, because the formula is so soothing and doesn’t hurt.
My impressions
This is my favorite lip SPF at the moment. It’s soft and melty, just like the name suggests, and glides on effortlessly. My lips are immediately smoother and feel better. Of course, SPF25 is great as well, although it would be even better to get something a little higher, like a 40 or 50 (probably wishful thinking for a formula with no white cast).
I would happily use this as a lip balm, because it’s lovely, even if I had to seek out a separate SPF. So it’s nice that this product combines both benefits so well.
The scent deserves a special mention - I don’t know how the brand accomplished this, but the balm smells exactly like a matcha latte to me. It’s a very natural, real smell. I adore it! I would love to eventually try the other versions as well, especially the honey one.
