Huangjisoo Sugar No:rinse Cleansing Pads

Updated: Oct 27, 2020

I absolutely love watching the lesser known wonderful brands become “mainstream”. I first encountered #Huangjisoo a few years ago. At that time, all they offered was a cleansing oil (my holy grail!) and a cleansing foam in a few variations. And now look at them! The lineup has expanded to toner, cleansing and toning pads, more sheet masks. Exciting. The brand was developed by a doctor and is aimed at people with all skin types, including sensitive. The products are vegan and made with organic ingredients.

The three types of Huangjisoo pads can be purchased as a set or separately. Today’s review is specifically about the Sugar No Rinse Cleansing Pads. These came to me as a holiday gift from the brand. They are sold on* eBay, Amazon, and Facetory.

The package says these are soaked in micellar water to remove SPF and makeup without the need to rinse. Simply wipe away your day and be done.

My impressions:

Sigh. I wanted to love these, I really did. But I don’t love them. I wouldn’t buy these. They definitely do not do a good job at removing makeup or SPF. I’m not a heavy makeup user, but even for me I can see the bb cream residue with the naked eye after using these. Also, if all I do is wipe with these and then do nothing else, my skin gets super tight (but still not actually clean).

I did find a use for them, however. I use a wipe when I get home from work (in the middle of the day since I only work part time). Then I rinse with water. This takes off the top layer of makeup and dust before I’m ready to do a full cleanse. They also do a fine job removing eye makeup (shadow and liner, but not so much mascara).

To be completely fair, I’m not huge into makeup wipes in general. I find them to be too harsh, and I don’t think “no rinse” is a good idea. If something is potent enough to remove makeup, should it really be left sitting on the skin afterwards? And if it is, in fact, very gentle, then it’s probably not actually cleansing (which seems to be the case with these).

I do like their size. They are larger than some of the other circular cleansing pads that I’ve had (like these Giibon ones). And the flip top jar is convenient to use. Perhaps heavy makeup users could utilize these to remove a lot of the eye makeup before properly double cleansing.

I can see the Huangjisoo Sugar No:rinse Cleansing Pads possibly replacing (but not very effectively) the first cleansing step, followed by a good quality foaming cleanser. But for me, a cleansing oil or a balm are a must. I love washing my face at the end of the day and feeling that supple, clean skin; these wipes do not give me that feeling. I’m just one person, and perhaps there are people who adore these and they work well for them. Also keep in mind that the brand sent out a lot of these as gifts, and people tend to have a more positive impression of the things they receive for free. That’s just how human gratitude works.

The reviews for the other two types of Huangjisoo pads are coming - stay tuned. Spoiler alert - I’ve had a much better experience there, which is why I didn’t want to combine the reviews for all three into one article.
