BONAJOUR Mugwort Cream Calming Mask Review

This post contains affiliate links. Product provided by Stylevana.

BONAJOUR Mugwort Cream Calming Mask is a wash off mask packed with mugwort and green tea leaves. It promises to soothe, cool, and soften the skin without causing dryness. The mask is available on Amazon and Stylevana (discount code INF10KBH).

In addition to mugwort and green tea, this product features organic vegetable ingredients and plant extracts to “remove skin toxins” for healthy skin. I’m not a fan of this type of marketing. Human bodies are perfectly designed to remove toxins, and if those systems aren’t working we would be in the emergency room / hospital, not applying face masks… Regardless, I try not to let shady marketing influence my opinion about the product itself and its performance.

How to use

  • Apply after cleansing, avoiding eye and lip area

  • Leave on for 15-20 minutes

  • Rinse and follow with the rest of your routine

I don’t recommend letting clay masks dry on the skin, so you might have to rinse it off before the 15/20 minute mark. Check out why, as well as other clay mask mistakes, in this video.

Bonajour Mugwort Cream Calming mask has noticeable inclusions of either mugwort or green tea leaves that provide very mild exfoliation. I do not notice a strong scent; perhaps a bit of an herbal one. It’s not memorable or overwhelming.

My impressions

At first I thought I liked this mask. It’s not as creamy and luxurious as AXIS-Y (review here), Isntree (review here) or I’m From (review here), but it was ok. However, toward the end of the tube I found that the mask felt drying and irritating if my skin barrier wasn’t 100% ok. Normally, I would reach for a mugwort mask exactly when my barrier is struggling, especially if I’m breaking out or had a recent pimple popping relapse. And yet it’s those times when the mask doesn’t feel good on the skin. Looking at the ingredients, I’m not sure which of the many plant extracts could be causing this feeling, perhaps grapefruit. Sadly, I have another brand new tube of this I got from an advent calendar, but I don’t think I’ll be opening it. I’ll see if any of my friends would want it instead (with a full disclosure as to why I don’t particularly love it).The last resort would be using it on the body.

Like most other clay masks, this one gives an immediate feeling of velvet, soft skin without much extra sebum. I don’t notice soothing or calming benefits worth mentioning. I’ve had products before that didn’t impress me much, but then with continued use totally changed my mind. This mask seemed to work in reverse - started out promising, but then ended up a disappointment.

If you are in the market for a soothing, creamy, wonderful mugwort mask, I would go with one of the three options I listed above. I’m From is gel-like, the other two are clay based (AXIS-Y is the creamiest). All three are great in their own right. Bonajour would not be my first (or even third) choice.
