Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil Review

Updated: Oct 20, 2020

I recently finished the oh so popular book Girl, Wash Your Face and I kept wanting to correct it to “girl, double cleanse your face”. The book, if you aren’t familiar with it, has nothing to do with actual cleansing, but that’s just where my mind goes. Effective cleansing is the first and, arguably, most important step of any Korean skincare routine - even the most effective, expensive products will not do their job correctly if applied over dirty skin.

Cleansing oils are made to dissolve dirt, oil, and makeup that would not come off with water-based (foaming) cleansers alone. The Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil is designed to effectively remove impurities from skin of all types. It is made without ethanol, parabens, silicone, steroids, and artificial colors. The brand is cruelty free. The oil is available on eBay, Amazon, and Wishtrend.

When I saw “black” in the name, I expected a black in color product, but it’s actually clear. The real reason this oil is called “black” is because of the following ingredients:

  • Black Bean Oil - controls sebum production, improves elasticity and soothes

  • Black Sesame Oil - full of powerful anti-aging antioxidants

  • Black Currant Seed Oil - promotes healthy skin barrier function

How to use:

  1. Massage a few pumps onto dry face with clean, dry hands

  2. Rinse off with warm water 2-3 times

Upon contact with water, the oil will emulsify/turn white and wash off easily.

My impressions:

Every once in a while, I discover a new (to me) brand that seems to hit every nail on the head, no matter what product of theirs I buy. I ordered several different Klairs products in 2018 and have been very happy with all of them so far (reviews here, more coming soon).

The oil cleanses gently but effectively. I have used it to remove makeup, sunscreen, and even eye makeup with no issues. One interesting thing to note - even after rinsing a couple of times, it leaves a bit of a barrier/layer on the skin that I can feel with my fingers. It’s very light and not sticky, but I’m not used to cleansing oils doing that. I always follow with a foaming wash (reviews here), and that feeling goes away, but I thought I would mention it in case someone else would find that useful. The scent is very faint and pleasant.

The bottle will likely last me months with regular use. One to two pumps is enough for the entire face. Even though I’ve used the oil regularly for a few weeks now, I have barely made a dent in its volume. Perfect, I love long-lasting products.
