I used to be all about oil control for my combination skin (oily in the t-zone, dry/normal everywhere else), but lately I’m realizing that the best way to achieve supple, healthy skin with a proper oil-water balance is to hydrate and protect it. A healthy skin barrier function keeps the moisture in and damaging effects of the environment out.
The Atopalm Real Barrier line focuses exactly on that - maintaining a healthy skin barrier and moisture levels. I loved their cleansing oil balm (review here) and was excited to try the Atopalm Real Barrier Essence Mist, available on* eBay, Amazon.
The Atopalm Real Barrier Essence Mist promises to hydrate and nourish the skin instantly and then provide a 24 hour “hydrating shield effect”.
Key ingredients:
Hyaluronic acid - attracts moisture to the skin
MLE® formula - a patented complex of ceramides to hydrate and support the skin barrier
Three-calming complex - a combination of panthenol, madecassoside, and allantoin to soothe and protect
This mist has been clinically proven to hydrate for 24 hours and doesn’t contain 10 potentially harmful/irritating compounds commonly found in other cosmetics, making it suitable even for sensitive skin.
How to use:
Cleanse the face
Shake the mist bottle well, then spray onto the face, avoiding the eye area
I personally use a toner first (reviews here), then spray the mist into my palms and apply like I would a more traditionally packaged essence. I simply don’t love the feeling of spraying product on my face, so I prefer my palms. If you love misting, then go ahead and do that.
My impressions:
When I first started dabbling in Korean beauty and skincare, I didn’t see the difference between essences and serums. I thought they basically did the same thing. But now my appreciation for essences has grown tenfold. This Atopalm one is watery yet so nourishing. When I spritz it into my palms (after shaking the bottle well), the liquid looks milky-white. It goes on clear and absorbs well, leaving my skin immediately moisturized and soothed. Sometimes I apply a serum over it (reviews here), but more often I just use a light lotion and then sunscreen.
This Real Barrier essence has quickly become one of the favorite products on my somewhat crowded bathroom shelf. There is no detectable scent, no stickiness, absolutely no irritation - just luxurious soothing and hydration. It’s great for the current dry, cold winter, but would likely work just as well in the summer, especially to help the skin recover from the drying chlorinated pool water and sun exposure. I definitely recommend it to anyone, but especially those with sensitive skin types that react poorly to products with fragrance or known allergens. You can read my other essence reviews here.
