Ultru I’m Sorry for My Skin Black Mud Mask Review

Updated: Jun 5, 2020

To me, there’s no such thing as pores that are too clean or too small - there’s always room for improvement. I’ve read a few good reviews about I’m Sorry for My Skin series of masks so I was excited to try this pore tightening one. And, spoiler alert, it didn’t disappoint!

This mud mask cleanses, tightens pores, and soothes irritated skin. It has an interesting design that I have not seen before - a thin, soft gauze is saturated in the “mud”, then sandwiched between two pieces of film for shipping/storage. The mask has two parts - upper half and lower half to ensure a custom fit.

The mask is available on eBay, Amazon and Facetory.

Active ingredients:

  • Kaolin clay - naturally absorbent and can soak up excess sebum and impurities, making the skin softer and smoother

  • Sea silt (10,000 ppm) - contains purifying clay and an array of trace elements, sulfur, and minerals to hydrate and nourish while strengthening the skin’s barrier

  • Lemon peel oil - brightens and purifies

  • Volcanic ash - helps with blemishes and irritation

How to use:

  • Cleanse the skin

  • Remove the clear film from one half of the mask (I did lower half first)

  • Apply the clay side to the face, take off the remaining film.

  • Repeat with the other half of the mask (overlap the lower and upper parts slightly to make sure the mask doesn’t slide around)

  • Relax for 30-40 minutes until the mask dries

  • Carefully remove the mask and rinse the remaining mud off with warm water

  • Continue with the rest of your routine

It’s very intuitive and a lot easier than it sounds (and my nose is always so much shorter than any of these masks).

A little personal note - I never leave clay masks on until they dry completely, as that can actually suck the moisture out of your skin and result in a difficult wash off process. I kept this mask on for 30 minutes. At that point, it was still quite “moist” but slightly tighter than when I started. It was easy to remove and rinse off the remaining clay.

My impressions:

The mask is amazing. I want 100 more. I typically am not a huge fan of clay masks as they can be drying (I have combination skin with an oily t-zone and dry-to-normal cheeks). But not this one! It cleaned up all the sebum and tiny impurities in my pores and made my skin look porcelain. The effect lasted several days. The two-piece design made it easy to line up the eye/mouth openings where I needed them to go, and nothing slid around my face during the 30 minute session. I was a little irritated that the packaging didn’t have nifty “nicks” to make opening easy, and ended up cutting it open and THEN noticed there are little corners that you peel up… and they are even marked pink. Whoops… user error at its finest :) I think it’s been three days and my pores are still looking great. I’ll have to try some other masks from this brand.

Since this Ultru mask is of clarifying/cleansing variety, it’s important to follow with hydrating and moisturizing routine. It would be best for oily and combination skin types. Here’s a sample of how I incorporated the mask into my evening routine:
