If you’ve spent any time on my blog (for which I sincerely thank you), you have probably noticed that I’m much more into skincare than decorative makeup. I truly believe that healthy skin is beautiful, regardless of age, and that slathering heavy “paint” on the surface that hasn’t been properly cared for isn’t going to look the best. With that said, I still want to look like myself but better. And sometimes, for special occasions or if my skin isn’t behaving that particular day, I need some foundation.
My most recent venture into the world of Korean makeup was Klairs Mochi BB Cushion, available on eBay, Amazon, YesStyle and Wishtrend. Did I buy this mostly for the packaging? Well, yes...
If you aren’t familiar with cushions, which are slowly becoming more popular outside of Korea, it’s just a form of packaging for various products. To put it simply, a case contains a sponge that is saturated in product (usually foundation/bb/cc cream, but it could also be blush, eyeshadow, and even sunscreen). The pack comes with a special applicator puff that gets pressed against this sponge, the product is released and then the applicator is tapped on the face. It’s quite nifty, really. The puffs can be cleansed just like makeup brushes, and they can also be replaced with new ones, if needed.
The Klairs Mochi BB Cushion formula is more of a balm than a liquid, designed to fill in the pores and provide a smooth finish that’s satin in nature (not totally matte but not shiny either, very natural). It only comes in one color that’s meant to compliment both cool and warm skin tones and neutralize redness while concealing other imperfections. As other BB creams, it will adjust to your skin tone after application, but still having only one color limits those on the deeper skin color spectrum.
How to use:
Apply as the last step, after sunscreen
Gently pat the product into the face with the included puff, starting from the center and working outwards
Set with powder, if desired (I do)

You might be tempted to skip sunscreen since the Klairs BB already has SPF 40. However, most people would not use enough foundation (volume-wise) to provide adequate sun protection, so it’s more of a nice-to-have extra SPF than the main defense against the sun. I have reviews for some excellent sunscreens here.
Klairs Mochi BB Cusion is made without ethanol, parabens, steroids, artificial colors and fragrances and has a pH of 6.6 ± 1.0. The brand is cruelty free. And it doesn’t stop at providing decorative services to your skin - it also contains beneficial ingredients with soothing and anti-aging properties like centella asiatica extract, adenosine, and aloe juice.
My impressions:
Let me start by saying that it’s so unfair that this amazing product only comes in one shade. I understand that most women in Korea are fair skinned, and I fall into that same category myself, but there are so many people around the world with different skin tones that deserve a chance to use this awesome cushion. I love it.
I have combination skin (oily t-zone, dry-to-normal everything else), no huge issues with pores, and occasional breakouts. I’m very prone to freckles and usually have at least a few, despite all of my efforts to control them. The Klairs Mochi BB Cushion provides medium coverage that is just enough for me. It covers redness and freckles without looking like a mask. It doesn’t sink into or highlight pores (and I don’t use a primer. It probably works even better with a primer). It’s quite long lasting. I wear glasses during the day for anything close-up, and after 6-7 hours the area on/around the nose tends to lose coverage, but that’s OK with me. A simple touch up with powder (I like this SPF one) makes everything look great again. And I’ve never had this BB cushion fail me at a party or a night out.
The finish is exactly what I like - satin-matte, without looking like a dull mask but also without the oily shine. I know some people like more dewy finishes, but on me that would simply look greasy. And a cool thing to note about the case - it has a clear inner “lid” that separates the sponge from the puff, and that lid locks! So there’s no chance for a mess if you carry this in your purse.
Overall, I would definitely buy this again and again. You can check out my other makeup reviews here.
